Why was my ferret sick with pus, straining, and bloody butt area?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Ferret | Male | neutered | 4 years and 4 months old | 1lb

I had to put my ferret down without really knowing why because he was so sick but i was wondering what was wrong with him? He has like pus type stuff coming out of his penis and he was like straining to poop and his butt area was red and slightly bloody

Hello, I am so sorry to hear this about Jack. Sometimes ferrets can get prostate infections that can cause difficulty urinating and defecating. An infection that ruptures in the abdomen is often quickly fatal despite treatments. A necropsy (pet autopsy) could confirm a cause of death if you want to be sure. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts today. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
