Why are my fish's fins fraying? Is it fin rot? Can Melafix help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Cichlid | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 8 months old

Dempsey’s fins are fraying and I cannot figure out why. All levels are normal, she is recovering from ammonia and ph induced stress, could this be a bacterial infection? Would melafix help her recover?

Yes, your suspicion is right, this could be due to a bacterial infection and yes, melafix could be helpful to try to resolve it. If you do not see any improvement in a week time please contact your local veterinarian as topical or injectable antibiotics may be needed.
