My small dog got large dog flea medicine. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 10 years and 6 months old | 9 lbs

Gave my 9 lb Chihuahua multi advantage flea topical meant for a 50 lb dog. I wiped it off quickly. She has no symptoms. What else should I do?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Dory. Oh no! I'd give her a bath to get it all off, and just watch her. If you see muscle tremors, excessive salivation, paw flicking, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy, take her into a vet immediately. Hopefully, she will be fine.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend giving Dory a bath with Dawn dish soap to decrease the amount left on the skin that could be absorbed. If you are concerned, or if she starts to develop any other symptoms, I would recommend reaching out to either your regular veterinarian or ASPCA poison control for further advice. Good luck!
