What can I put over my dog's wound to stop them from licking it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 80 lbs

Hi my dog has cancer and she has a wound that’s bleeding on her back right side. I’m trying to get her not to lick it. Is there anything I can put over it to prevent her from doing so?

Hello. Poor baby. You can use an Elizabethan cone to keep her from reaching the area. There are the rigid plastic ones which might stress her out, so I would find one of the soft, flexible ones, or one that blows up like a soft neck collar. They also make body suits for dogs that can be used after surgeries & to protect wounds. You can ask your vet for a recommendation but here is one you can buy on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Suitical-Recovery-Suit-Dogs-medium/dp/B00W2EHJWE. Thanks for using PetCoach.

Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry this is happening to Precious. Try not to be too upset. It is imperative that you keep her from licking it. I strongly recommend you use an Ecollar. Try one of these flexible ones instead of the hard plastic ones. Remember the collar has to be long enough to go past the end of her nose or she will still be able to lick. ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/dog/dog-health-and-wellness/dog-ecollars/all-four-paws-tan-comfy-cone-5000727--1 ) The other option is to put a basket muzzle on her and keep it on her at all times. They can eat and drink with these on: ( https://www.morrco.com/basket-muzzles.html ) As you know, this area is very hard to bandage and often times the dogs will just pull the bandage off. Even if she leaves the bandage alone, it is not recommended to keep it covered as it needs air to dry out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
