Why won't my cockatiel come out of his cage or let me hold him?

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male | 6 years and 10 months old

My cockatiel is turning 7 this November. I've had him all 7 years. But since year 3 or 4 he stopped wanting to come out of his cage. He hates everything. He hates all his toys, he hates anyone who tries to go near him, and He hates all the little playgrounds I buy for him. The only thing he likes is me. When I walk beside his cage, he runs over for me to pet him. But even though I'm the only he likes, he still won't let me hold him. Every time I try to put him on my finger he runs away. And even

Thanks for reaching out about Copper. Training is more difficult as they age, as they are not as pliable to new situations. It is really de-sensitization to things that needs to be done. Start by scratching/petting, and offering a treat by hand. Then with the treat, try and train to reach his leg up, then to step up. Its a gradual process. The book "A Guide to a Well-behaved Parrot" is a good start. Good luck.
