My dog has worm symptoms. Is an OTC dewormer safe without a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 8 years and 9 months old | 80 lbs

I suspect my dog has worms. I haven’t seen any in his stool, be he has many symptoms. Scooting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss and lethargy. Is it safe to give him an over the counter dewormer without going to the vet?

Hello. Yes, & no. If you just use an over the counter wormer & there is something else amiss with Buddy, you could be losing valuable time finding what is really wrong. I cannot tell you what to do, there are very good wormers you can administer yourself, such as Safeguard wormer for dogs, but with all the symptoms you have mentioned, I do think there is more going on than just a case of worms. Good luck & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
