My sick cat stopped eating. Was putting her to sleep too soon?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 6.6 lbs

i had my 13 year old cat put to sleep a few days ago and im struggling with whether or not i made the decision too soon and am seeking your opinion. she hadn’t eaten at all for 6 days, she also had cat flu and was on antibiotics and was given an appetite stimulating shot which didn’t help. She had lost weight and wasn’t moving around much but didn’t appear to be suffering. I still wonder if i’d waited a few more days she might have started eating again. the vet said i was doing the right thing.

Poor Molly! From what you're describing here, it sounds like she was extremely sick. In my experience, when a cat is not eating, feeling poorly, and not responding to supportive care for several days, the problem is generally not treatable and euthanasia is the kindest option. So yes, I think you made the right decision for your kitty. I'm very sorry for your loss.
