My cat has a scrape from a fight. Is Bag Balm safe for the wound?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 3 years and 3 months old | 9.3 lbs

My cat got into a small fight with my other cat earlier this morning. They are both updated on their shots and indoor only. Luna has a non puncture wound on her cheek, it looks similar to a scrape. There is also minimal blood. Can I put bag balm on the wound to protect it while it heals?

While bag balm's ingredients don't seem toxic, it may still just get licked off by Luna. I would keep the wound clean and dry and keep an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Luna to keep her and your other cat from licking or pawing at it. Since cat bites can very easily become infected due to the saliva in their mouths, if it starts to look weepy at all or swells, seeking veterinary care ASAP to have the area cleaned and antibiotics started is best.
