My dove has an infected eye. How can I treat it without a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

We're in Pakistan right now to meet family and theres a dove and he has his eye very messed up, it's a wound and from what I know it had accumulated some pus, the areas starting to go slightly dark, I cant tell whether its because of dirt, infection or cell death. By the way just so you know we have no access to a vet or wildlife rehabilitator (though I doubt this dove will survive kn the wild without one eye) I was hoping if you ould give some advice on how to nurse the wound?

Thanks for reaching out about the dove. Typically, wounds need to be cleaned and then antibiotics to treat and prevent infections. Try cleaning the wound with warm water with a moistened cotton tipped applicator, to remove debris, dirt and pus. This wound management is often for long term, weeks or more. Antibiotics require a veterinary visit to prescribe. Good luck.
