Why does my dog get a gurgly stomach and lick the floor monthly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 24 lbs

Once a month my dog seems to get a gurggly/grumbly stomach for a day. He usual doesn’t eat that day but typically has his normal activity level and drinks water like normal and pottys normal but he will lick the floor trying to eat hair throughout the day. He’s always been on a natural high quality food but it doesn’t seem to matter what brand of food he’s on this will still happen. Any idea on what causes this or what will prevent it? Thank you.

Without diagnostics, it's hard to know why this is happening. It's possible he has some shifts in his gut bacteria. Things like parasites are also common. There are also more sinister causes. If it has been great than 6 months since Bubbles has had a fecal exam to check for parasites, I recommend to have this done. You may also try boostering his gut bacteria with a probiotic 1 week out of every month. Use Purina FortiFlora. It has been tested and is proven to contain live bacteria. Other treatments may be available based up test results. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
