Why is my senior cat suddenly following me everywhere and meowing?

My cat suddenly has been following me around everywhere in my bedroom, he is 16, very healthy and everything but scared of the new cats in the house so he will not leave. But when I am in my room he follows me around to the bathroom, closet, to bed, getting ready at my vanity. He has food, water and a clean litter box. He sits with me in the bathroom and meows while I take baths and tries to drink the water even if his water dish is full. I and confused as to what this behavior is about because.
