Why is my pet's eye discharging clear, then reddish-brown, and red-rimmed?

Clear Discharge from one eye 2 or three times a day for last 4 days. Tonight discharge has reddish brown tinge and her eye is red rimmed. Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed
