Why is my fish bent and having trouble swimming, even after fasting?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Unknown - Fish | Female

My fish's body has been bent like this for a few weeks now. She can swim, but only if she tries really hard and her tail is not of much use -- she mostly uses her fins. It takes her a lot of effort to swim around so now she'll just sit at the bottom of her tank, where she used to be very active, but she still eats and swims up to me when I approach. I thought it was a swim bladder problem, but fasting her didn't seem to help. She's always had a little bend in her tail but never to this extent.

Thanks for reaching out about Freddie. A bent body is often a spinal disease, possibly a dislocation or fracture. Vitamin C deficiencies are common if the the pellets or flakes are not replaced every few months. Trauma, infections or stray electrical voltages are also possible. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic plan. Good luck.
