Why is my bird always puffed up? Is it a sign of a health problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male

Hi, my bird is puffed up a lot of the time, I've been doing some more research and I know it could be because he is sick. He's been doing this for about a year (witch is how long he's been alive) nothing has changed in diet or anything, he's still happy and loves to fly, he's never had any nasal discharge or loss in appetite he doesn't have trouble pooping or anything like that. I've been monitoring him for a while. He also sleeps with his head behind his back, if thats of any concern.

Thanks for reaching out about Sprout and including photos. Being fluffed is a general sign os possible illness, nothing specific. A veterinary visit is needed to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some aid but is not a treatment. Monitor food and water intake. Good luck.
