How to train my dog to not be afraid or aggressive towards big dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 10 lbs

My two -year old unneutered mini dachshund is super afraid of bigger size dogs. Everytime he sees a big dog getting close to him, he'd either run away if he can or show aggression to protect himself even the other dog has no intent to hurt him. I really want to know what is the most right and effective way to train him not afraid of big dogs. For example, what should i do next time we see another dog while walking if JOJO keeps pushing himself back and try to escape?

Consider a pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar, which may decrease any anxiety or aggression. You will also need to desensitize Jojo to the presence of larger dogs. Do this by introducing a large dog for ever increasing periods of time. Begin at a distance and gradually bring them closer. Correct any negative or aggressive behavior immediately and consistently praise good behavior and positive reactions. It will take some time, so be patient. You may need the assistance of a certified trainer or veterinary behaviorist.
