My cat has URI and mouth ulcers. Is it FCV or FHV? What about the vaccine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 months and 12 days old | 4 lbs

Do oral ulcers during a URI point to the FCV as opposed to FHV? Cat had FVRCP a month ago, but vet today diagnosed FCV due to corneal ulcers with swelling, a s all ulcer on tongue, and an ulcerated nose. Are there any telling signs to look for to distinguish the two? Cat is somewhat lethargic spends an hour or so of rambunctious activity after he wakes up. Incredibly hyper after his long naps, eats/drinks/eliminates regularly. Is the FVRCP vaccination not a fail safe for the calici virus?

Hello, Yes, generally oral ulcers point to FCV over FHV. A blood test can differentiate the two if you want to be certain. Its either possible that Jonesy was exposed to one of these viruses prior to being vaccinated, or that he did respond to the vaccine and is currently much less sick than he would be if he were unvaccinated.
