My dog scratched his head raw. Can I wash and treat the cut at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year and 8 months old

Jasper has been scratching himself pretty roughly, he had his nails trimmed a few days ago and we've checked him for fleas and ticks, he's free of them. He gave himself a pretty rough cut up on his head, above his ear. Is it safe to wash and put anything on it to help it heal?

Poor Jasper. I would gently clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it.
