My pregnant dog is in a parvo outbreak. Can I vaccinate her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 10 lbs

Hi ! My small little kennel has parvo!! I raise dachshunds. Have lost 3 young ones. Two 4 month olds and an 8 month old. I have 11 other adult doxies that are vaccinated . I have 3 pregnant females in this group. Vaccines were given approx a yr ago. I did NOT vaccinate again right before breeding.. Since I have lost 3 precious young doxies, I am terrified now. Vaccinating everyone with Neopar the past couple days-except pregnant mamas. Can -should I vaccinate mamas with a killed parvo vac now??

Hello, I'm sorry to hear about the parvo outbreak. It is a nasty disease. It is not usually recommended to vaccinate pregnant dogs. In the future, I would recommend vaccinating female dogs just prior to mating. The pups that will be born will likely not have any protective antibodies to parvo, and will be very susceptible. I would keep them in an extremely clean environment and start their parvo vaccines at 6 weeks of age. However, I would still rationally expect more fatalities to come from this disease given the outbreak in an environment with so many dogs.
