My dog has a hot spot and keeps rubbing it. What can I use to heal it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Male | neutered | 57 lbs

I took my dog to the vet Friday morning and he prescribed amoxicillin/clav, 875 milligrams split in half, half twice a day and 5 milligrams prednisone, one a day for 7 days, he said it should be feeling better in a couple days. He keeps rubbing it to where it starts to bleed. I now have to put an e collar on him. Is there anything else I can put on the wound to help heal it. I can’t afford to keep running him back to the vets. I don’t even know what it is. I’m thinking a hot spot

Yes it looks like a hot spot. You can try this hot spot spray medication. If that does not help after about 5 days then he should go back to the vet. Good idea with the E-collar. Definitely continue using that. ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetericyn-plus-hot-spot-antimicrobial-gel-for-dogs )
