My fish has a fat belly and red tail fin. Is it dropsy? What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Gold Fish | Female | unspayed

My fish had to be kept in poor water quality for some time due to inevitable conditions. Today when we took her out in a bucket she had a fat belly. I don't know whether it can be called swollen or not but she is fat when you look from the top and has red tail fin most probably blood on one side her tail fin. What condition is this? What can I do?

Hello, Unfortunately, the condition is most likely a fluid accumulation in the abdomen, often referred to in layman's terms as "dropsy". It is generally a sign of severe disease with a poor prognosis. Here is a video of a veterinarian explaining this in more detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42DAoriYhVI I hope this helps.
