Why is my dog pooping bone fragments a week after no bones?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | neutered | 6 years old | 25 lbs

My dogs is acting normal and eating normal, however he has been pooping out rock hard square pieces of what looks like it could be pieces of bone. I first noticed this over a week ago. I removed all bones from the house. He is still pooping out these pieces every third or fourth poop. Could this be bone even though he hasn't had any in over or week or is it something else? Picture of poop are attached.

I agree with you, it does appear to be bone fragments. You are extremely lucky that are passing through and have not become stuck or perforated the intestinal wall. It can take a lot of time for them to pass through - they are heavy and the body has been trying to digest them. I suggest you feed him a lot of fiber for the next few days and if he starts to act ill in any way you need to have him to your vet for an exam. Sources of fiber: canned pumpkin (pure pumpkin, not pie filling), and slices of bread work best.
