Cat on Clavamox for URI: Is increased discharge normal? When to worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 months and 10 days old | 4 lbs

Started my cat on Clavamox from the vet this morning for a severe URI. Discharge from nose and mouth seems to have increased a bit, is that normal for Clavamox? He is still eating and pooping and somewhat active, breathing through nose primarily (sometimes mouth open during sleep) but I was curious about the increased discharge and the what signs I might need to look for that his condition is worsening/need to go to ER

Hello, Sorry to hear about Jonesy's URI. The discharge is likely increasing as it is now responding to medication, which means the mucous will become thinner and get expelled more. This is a good thing! He should start to dry up in a couple of days. If Jonesy has a change in attitude, decrease in appetite, or appears to be struggling to breathe at rest, those would be signs of the infection getting worse. The most common side effect of Clavamox in cats is mild vomiting or diarrhea from a change in gastrointestinal flora. I hope this helps!
