My dog ate string, now has diarrhea and is lethargic. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 88 lbs

My 16 month old American staffy pooed out about .5m of rope/string yesterday. She then last night pooed inside which she would never usually do and the Poo was half solid and half almost liquid. She stayed in her kennel all day with no motivation to do anything where she usually is very active and excited to see anyone

Hi, and thanks for your question. These signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver). There is definitively the possibility of the presence of other foreign bodies still inside the gastrointestinal system. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics and possibly further investigations (like abdominal imaging as ultrasound or radiographs) may be needed.
