Why is my senior dog breathing heavily with large throat lumps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Catahoula Leopard Dog | Female | spayed | 13 years and 4 months old | 79 lbs

My dog is 13, and over the past year to year and a half, she has started breathing heavily pretty much all the time aside from when she's asleep. Earlier tonight I noticed that on either side of her throat there seems to be a rather sizable lump... almost the size of a racket ball. She has had lipomas (forgive my spelling) developing all over her for close to 4 years now.. I'm well aware that's should get her to a vet asap, but I currently don't have the money to do so in the immediate.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Elphaba. I worry that bumps you have noticed are enlarged lymph nodes. I would try to feel other areas on her body for similar and symmetrical bumps. Lymph nodes are also found in front of the shoulders, in the armpits and groin as well as behind the knees. She will need to see a veterinarian to have her condition diagnosed, but enlarged lymph nodes can indicate serious disease. I hope this information helps!
