My dog is yelping, acting strange, sad, and wants to cuddle. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 8 months old | 11 lbs

My dog has been yelping randomly and sticking his tail between his legs and acting strange. He has been looking sad and won’t leave my side and just wants to be cuddled which isnt typical. He usually barks when he hears noises outside and has completely stopped doing that. I was thinking maybe he got something caught in his throat and he’s yelping in pain because other than that he still goes for walks and eats and goes to the bathroom just fine.

If only Milo could talk! This type of behavior could be related to something like anxiety or to pain/discomfort. I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian who will check for evidence of pain on the physical exam. Many times this type of sudden pain is related to intervertebral disc disease, discospondylitis, upper abdominal pain or a pinched nerve. They may also check a urine sample or the anal glands as well. Since he can't talk, it's best to play it safe. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
