Dog peeing, anxious with new puppies. How to help them get along?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 8 months old

Hi there, me and my girlfriend have a male shitzu and we took in 2 Balinese puppies yesterday. One's a male and one's a female. Now, our shitzu is peeing everywhere (being territorial) and he starts crying and biting himself out of nowhere (acting crazy). The puppies are playing with each other but don't play with the shitzu yet although they did have some small interactions. How should we proceed to turn all the dogs into buddies and make this work? Thanks in advance, Marnix

This may be more difficult because Gembul is not neutered. Dogs who are not neutered tend to be more reactive than dogs who are. Getting him neutered may help to make things easier in the long run. You will also want to have the puppies spayed and neutered at 6 months old so that the female does not get pregnant (she will breed with her brother) and two males who are not neutered are more likely to fight. A few things that may help including giving Gembul lots of daily exercise. The more tired he is, the less energy he will have for anxiety or bad behavior.
