My dog has cataracts. Is surgery effective? See an ophthalmologist?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 years and 8 months old | 16 lbs

My dog Max has advanced cataracts on both his eyes and is almost completely blind. He has a lot of energy but he can be rather unpredictable now as he can't see who is approaching him. He also ran straight toward the road today, and he also struggles to find his toys. We had been considering surgery, but some groomers at his appointment said we shouldn't because it usually doesn't work well. Is this true? Should we still go to the ophthalmologist?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Max. Yes, I recommend consulting with a veterinary ophthalmologist. In my experience, cataract surgery is very successful. Patients can have their vision restored. I hope this information helps!
