Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkipoo | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 6 days old | 5 lbs

My dog is a 5 month old yorkiepoo. she received her shots monday september 23. she got a rabies shot deworming and the kennel cough shot through her nose. she was fine all tuesday. then on wednesday i gave her a medication for heart worm given by the vet. and she started reverse sneezing that same night. i’m wondering if it’s cause to take her to the vet or wait a few days. she is eating and drinking water fine. and seems normal.

Reverse sneezing isn't particularly linked to vaccinations or to heartworm medication. It is simply irritation of the throat (larynx) due to possible allergies or irritation of the throat from a foreign object. I would recommend monitoring her today to see if the reverse sneezing resolves on its own within 24 hrs. As long as she isn't acting ill, eating, drinking well then its ok to monitor. If the sneezing fits don't seem to be resolving on their own, then its best to contact your vet who will likely recommend a short course of antihistamines to try next. In rare instances, a nasal mite is the underlying cause for unresolved reverse sneezing. I hope that Kona's reverse sneezing fits resolve soon! Best wishes and take care.

Reverse sneezing is generally a benign condition that resolves on its own. It may have an allergic component. If it persists and affects breathing, eating or drinking, then Kona should be examined by your veterinarian.
