Is dog urinary leakage common after catheter? How long do sedatives last?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | unneutered | 8 years old | 40 lbs

My dog has just come back from the vet after a urinary blockage due to a build up of crystals in his bladder. To alleviate the vet placed a catheter temporarily. I wanted to ask is urinary leakage common after a temporary catheter? And how long do sedatives last as he is still a little wobbly and the catheter was placed around 12:30pm

Yes, urinary leakage can occurr after catheter placement and can last a couple of days. How long the sedation lasts depends on the type of drugs used but can last 24 hours. Hope this helps and that things settle soon.
