My senior dog needs costly vet care. How can I afford treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 13 years and 2 months old | 20 lbs

my girlfriend has a Maltese and Pekingese mix named Buzz that is 13years old. About three years ago he had a hernia in his neck and we spent about 4500 to have surgery. Surgery was successful and we haven't really had any problems since but the vet warned us that he has a few places which will likely cause a problem in the future. I think he is having issues again. If I can't find a cheaper vet and cannot pay another 4500 to fix it what other alternatives are there for our family?

Sorry Buzz is having some issues again. Your options are to get a CareCredit card to pay for his expenses or to contact some of the organizations in the link below to see if someone can help you. ( https://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/ ) ( https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/having-trouble-affording-veterinary-care ) In the future, you may want to consider pet insurance for any new pets. It is well worth it and will cover things like this in most cases. Getting insurance now will not help as this is a pre-existing condition and at his age, most companies will not cover him. If he had been covered since he was a puppy they would. ( https://trupanion.com/ )
