Why is my senior cat pooping on the floor at night instead of his box?

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Male | neutered | 10 years and 5 months old | 19 lbs

Hey there! I've got a large Ragdoll (we think) cat that is roughly 10 years old who stopped using his litterbox for anything other than urine starting about 6 weeks ago. Always at night, when we're asleep, usually every 2-4 days, he goes on a binge poop, dropping of "presents" (ranging from hard/dry to wet/soft) on our front porch mat, my office rug, the hardwood floors along a wall, by the litterbox, on the rug by his feeder. No changes to clean litter situation or diet in over a year.

That is quite strange behavior. I would first make sure there is nothing medically wrong with him. Your vet can check a fecal for parasites including giardia to ensure everything is normal. I would also think about whether anything else has changed in the house that coudl be causing him to be stressed like new people, changing in work or at home schedules, construction, new pets, children starting to crawl/walk, etc. If you aren't sure, it never hurts to add in some feliway diffusers throughout the house. Feliway is a cat pheromone to help calm them and help with anxiety. If this doesn't work, I would talk to your vet about starting him on an anti-anxiety medicine like amitryptilline. I hope this helps!
