My dog shows heat signs, male sniffing, but no blood. Is she okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 7 months old | 45 lbs

My female dog (almost 5 years old) usually goes into heat once in the summer once in the winter. So I've been waiting for her to start at any minute now since summer is coming to an end. She seems like she is close, there is some swelling like there normally is but no blood. And my male dog keeps sniffing her like she is in heat. They have never mated or had puppies. I'm stumped and I worry if there might be something wrong.

If you know it is past time for her to be in heat and other signs are beginning you could wait another week to see if there is any blood or you can have your vet take a look at her. Your vet could do a vaginal cytology to tell you more about what phase of her heat cycle she may be in. If she is not acting herself, not eating or drinking or seems lethargic at any time, I would strongly recommend to have your vet take a look at her. I hope this helps!
