My French bulldog yelps & won't jump. Could it be IVDD? Emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 6 months old

I have a 2 1/2 year old French bulldog. I noticed Sunday that he would not jump up on the couch. Sunday night he would yelp every time he would try to lay down or get back up. He seemed fine yesterday (chasing chickens) but last night he yelped again throughout the night. He is eating and using the bathroom with no issues. Could this be something more serious than a pulled muscle or something? His regular vet cannot see him today. Wondering if I should take him to an emergency vet for a check.

If an emergency vet is an option, I would take Nelson in. Brachycephalic dogs (the short-nosed breeds) are prone to developing intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) which could cause these types of symptoms. The vet will do a thorough physical and neurologic exam, and may recommend x-rays to determine what is going on and to select the best treatment plan.
