Jojoba cream not helping my dog's skin infection. What should I use?

Oh my. I would definitely recommend an oral antibiotic prescribed by your vet and then a cream such as Silver Sulfadiazene. This is a deep pyoderma infection, so it requires both topical and oral antibiotics. I hope that Luna's skin infection clears up soon! Best wishes and take care.

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Judging from the pictures you have provided, this area on the skin looks as though it could be from a bacterial skin infection. There are several products you can use but the one I would recommend that you can pick up at stores like PetCo would be Sentry Anti-Bacterial Wound Cream for Dogs. I would apply this until you are able to get to the veterinarian as Woofy may also need a course of an oral antibiotic. I would also recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS Chlorhexidine combination and Malacetic conditioning spray, which can be found online quite easily. The shampoo should be used twice weekly and the spray applied twice daily until the problem resolves. I hope this helps! This really looks like a skin infection. I would recommend having a recheck and it looks like she should be on an oral antibiotic that is effective for skin infections. Your vet may also want to make sure that this is not a fungal infection.

I treat bacterial skin infections with oral antibiotics, medicated baths that get bacteria (miconazole just gets yeast) and since this is chronic I would recommend a prescription novel protein or hydrolyzed diet to rule out food allergies as the cause. I would also start an oral antihistamine and Omega 3 fish oils. I tell my clients with chronic allergies to expect to be on apoquel, a special diet, an antihisamine and Omega 3 fish oils for the rest of the pets life. If there is a pustule (white head) the Vet can culture that to be sure that the correct antibiotic is chosen. It takes 3 weeks or longer to clear a bacterial skin infection with the correct antibiotic, this requires you to follow up with your vet to be sure the infection is 100% gone before the antibiotic is stopped. It's hard to say based on just a photo of the skin. Some samples (cytology) should be taken of the skin cells through your vet first. Based on what is found, we can then select the appropriate treatment for this. Whether that is an antibiotic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, or even steroid is totally dependent on the results of that skin test. In the meantime you can try giving Jack pet formulated fish oils from your local pet store to help combat any inflammation of the skin. Also a good high quality dog food (i.e. Royal Canin, hills science diet, Innova, etc) is best to promote a healthy skin and haircoat. It does look like a skin infection but the origin (bacterial, fungal, yeast) I don't know just by looking at it. If it is bacterial, sometimes oral antibiotics are needed if topical therapy is not working. I don't know what cream you are using as I am not aware of a chlorhexidine cream, or how long you have been using it, so it's hard for me to comment much more on what you are already doing. Unfortunately hydrogen peroxide doesn't help pets with any type of skin condition. In fact we don't use it for any wounds because it can potentially cause cell necrosis (dying off of normal tissue). This appears to be a deep infection, which is likely why it hasn't healed well for you. You can try cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water and the hair needs to be shaved around this to allow the skin to breathe and heal well. I would not place Neosporin on a wound like this, because it likely won't help. You may be able to find a hot spot spray at your local pet store that can be used. However, there is a good chance this won't heal without the help of your vet, who has stronger oral antibiotics and topical medical sprays to take care of this properly. Ouch, poor Wan! Skin rashes can be caused by a number of things including bacterial infections, fungus, yeast, metabolic issues, food and environmental allergies and more. If the cream you're using isn't working, it is a good idea to bring Wan back to the vet for another exam. Your vet may recommend a skin scraping of the affected area to figure out the underlying cause, or may recommend blood work to check for metabolic issues causing the skin changes. From there, your vet can prescribe additional medications or medicated shampoos. Keeping Wan from licking and chewing the area with an Elizabethan (cone) collar is best to prevent further irritation.
