My dog has aspiration pneumonia. Will he have a productive cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 2 years and 11 months old | 90 lbs

My dog was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia on 9/20. Should I expect him to have a productive cough/bring anything up like a human would?

Hello. I am so sorry that Brutus has aspiration pneumonia. Some pets will develop a productive cough, others will just breath very fast or very heavily & never cough. I hope he is receiving proper treatment & will be back to normal soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
