My puppy's sensitive nipple is swollen during heat. Is it mastitis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 26 days old | 45 lbs

My puppy is eight months old and in her first heat. Approximately 2.5 weeks along. Her temperament seems fine. We noticed she may have mastitis on one nipple. Not sure if it requires any evaluation by our veterinarian or antibiotics. We haven’t noticed any discharge but noticed now that she had a crossed around the nipple and it slightly swollen. She is eating drinking playing no problems with elimination. Appears to be sensitive when touch but doesn’t react strongly . No pain

Hello. This is not mastitis, just some mammary development, so no antibiotics are required at this time. Just watch the area & do consider spaying Ruby so she never has a chance to develop mastitis or a uterine infection in the future. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
