Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Female | 10 months and 22 days old

I don't know what's wrong with my budgie she has swollen vent from last 10 days. When I searched I came to know that it may be egg binding.I would like to know how many days does budgie take to lay eggs or how many days does it can have egg binding case or hold egg inside it's vent.As I don't have any vet near to me I would like to know some remedies to solve this problem as I provide cuttlefish bone, spinach, carrots, millets etc to them. I am looking forward for any positive reply.

If Katrin is egg bound she will likely be unable to pass the egg on her own. In most cases, this requires veterinary care as incorrectly trying to remove the egg can cause it to break inside the vent which can lead to infection. If you're already feeding her a proper diet, soaking her bottom in warm water, or using a little olive oil around her vent may help to pass the egg gently without breaking it.

Soak her for 15-20 minutes in a warm Epsom salt solution, deep enough to submerge her vent. Afterwards, apply a small amount of mineral or olive oil around her vent. This should help pass the egg. If not, she will need to be seen by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet.
