My cockatiel has a watery eye. Are steroid eye drops safe for birds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Female | unspayed

The vet (he deals with birds as well as other animals) I took my cockatiel to, for her eye problem, suggested the use of Ciprofloxacin dexamethasone eye drops for her. Her right eye has been watery. But not red or swollen. A few feathers lost/possibly wet around the eye. Is dexamethasone a right choice ? He has also suggested cefpodoxime orally for her mild voice problem, seems to be mild cold.

Thanks for reaching out about Mishka. Corticosteroids can be very immunosuppressive and is generally not recommended in birds so would be a little worried. Voice loss needs to be investigated but oral systemic antibiotics could help, unless a fungal infection. If possible try an ophthalmic antibiotics without steroids. If inflamed, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory preferred. Good luck.
