My dog has a split paw. Does it need a vet or will it heal on its own?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 48 lbs

My pitbull was licking her paw for 2-3 days before I noticed that it was split to the quick. I have been cleaning since yesterday with peroxide and wrapping it with a sock. Will it clear up on its on or does she need to be seen by a vet for medicine?

Ouch! I would keep the area clean and dry and if it doesn't heal, becomes very painful, hot to the touch, red or swollen, or oozes debris bring Zaida to your vet as those all indicate an infection that requires additional treatment.
