My dog is vomiting and won't eat after neuter surgery, what's wrong?

My dog was neutered on Wednesday and as of Saturday evening he started to throw up and cant keep anything down. He has not eaten anything he wasn't supposed to. He gags when you try to give him any type of food including rice and can only keep a little water down.

Poor pup! If he's vomiting, not eating, and isn't able to keep anything down, this is very concerning - so I would recommend taking him back in to your veterinarian today to be seen. It's possible that this could be some type of complication related to his neuter surgery, or could be a totally separate problem. Your veterinarian can examine him and may recommend blood work, x-rays, or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed.

    Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Baloo! Stress may make a dog not want to eat but stress or not eating doesn't make a dog vomit. Baloo is vomiting because he is sick. If he is on medications after his neuter they could be making him sick and I would call your Vet to discuss stopping them. Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, anesthesia or medications, viral or bacterial infections, foreign body (he ate something that is stuck and requires surgery to remove), food allergy/intolerance, new treats/dog food or human food, toxin ingestion. I would only offer water in small amount and do not offer food for 12 hours. If there is no vomiting in that 12 hour period then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he continues to vomit he should be seen by a Vet for an exam, blood work and belly X-rays. I hope this helps and I wish Baloo the best!

Keep him on boiled rice and chicken for 2-3 days, it might still be related to the anesthesia he went through, if it doesn't resolve in 3 days, take him back to the vet to get it checked and treated.

These are very worrisome symptoms. The vomiting and diarrhea might not be related to his recent neuter. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian as soon as possible -they would probably recommend checking blood work and x-rays and can start some treatment to make him more comfortable.

I am sorry to hear that Rosie is not well. This is very uncommon to see a dog being so unwell 5 days after neutering. I would strongly recommend you to take Rosie back to your vet and ask to perform some investigation to make sure that she is ok. Vomiting could be a side-effect of general anaesthesia or morphine injections but in some cases vomiting in post-operative period may be due to kidney malfunction. Also, infection within the abdominal cavity causing vomiting and lethargy is possible. To be on a safe side, Rosie should have a blood test and abdominal scan done as soon as possible.

I got my dog neutered today and he just threw up. Is that normal?
Hi, and thanks for your question. That could be completely normal after the procedure and anesthesia. I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. My dog was neutered on Monday and hasn’t had any bad reactions until now. He has vomiting spells where he vomits multiple times at a clip. Is he ok?
I think this presentation is unlikely to be related to the recent surgery. These signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics and possibly further investigations (like abdominal imaging as ultrasound or radiographs) may be needed. Diarrhea and throwing up can be caused by a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Loki for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the vomiting or if he still appears ill or lethargic, you should take him to your vet for a recheck. This may all be stress related, but you never know, there could be a gastro-intestinal infection as well. It is better to feed chicken instead of turkey, as turkey contains tryptophan, which can make your dog sleepy and lethargic.

It isn't likely to have caused whatever is causing the symptoms. It is likely he had a pre-existing condition that may have been aggravated by the anesthesia. Many of these drugs are filtered by the liver and kidneys. Blood work is a start. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites, bacterial overgrowth or malabsorption/maldigestion issues. Whatever the underlying cause, supportive care is likely indicated. Discuss a feeding tube and parenteral nutrition (IV nutritional support) with your veterinarian.

I am sorry that Fireball was vomiting. It depends on how he is doing now. Anesthesia can slow down a dogs intestinal tract and they can get nauseous from it. It is not concerning if a dog vomits once or twice after anesthesia. It may have been a lot with the anesthesia and medication. I would recommend monitoring him right now. Monitor the incision and make sure it isn't oozing, swelling too much or extremely painful. Monitor him and his vomiting. If he continues to vomit or there is blood then I recommend a vet. Also, if he becomes lethargic I recommend a vet. I would feed him a small meal tomorrow morning and if he holds everything down then give the medication. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Hello there! My dog was just neutered yesterday and he isn’t eating his dog food regularly. he seems to want treats but not interested in food. What should I do?
He may still be a bit groggy or nauseous from anesthesia yesterday or he may be a bit painful still. If he doesn't have pain medication, contact your vet and ask the something be dispensed. Mix in some warm water or a teaspoon of baby food with his food to stimulate his appetite. You can also offer a bland diet of plain white rice mixed in equal parts with boiled boneless/skinless chicken breasts. Once he begins eating, transition him slowly to his regular diet. Make sure he has water or some unflavored PediaLyte to drink to prevent dehydration. This should pass in the next 24 hours. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain. If Odin doesn't begin eating in the next 24-36 hours, have him examined by your veterinarian.

Is he still on the antibiotics? If so maybe you could call and request a different medication? If he is no longer taking the medication and he is still vomiting then she should have a follow up appointment. It is possible that it is just coincidental with the neutering and he could have a foreign body in his stomach, or a parasite causing him to vomit. They may want to do an x-ray and/or some blood work. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.
