When should I separate my dwarf hamster's babies to prevent breeding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed | 0.0002 lbs

My dwarf hamster had babies. I recently discovered due to being out on vacation. She has 9. They have all their fur and just opened their eyes yesterday. They eat the seeds and food I leave in the bottom of the cage and can drink from the water bottle but still latch every now and then to mom. I don’t know when to separate them because I don’t know their age. Any guess?

They look to be 3-4 weeks old. At about 4 weeks old, all hamster babies should be split from the mother into two cages—one for males and one for females. If you keep them all together they will start to breed as they become sexually mature at only 4-6 weeks of age. It is very bad for them to breed each other as they are related.
