My puppy has yellow diarrhea & won't eat after vaccines. Reaction?

My puppy just had his 9 week old booster vaccines two days ago for distemper, parovirus, and a few others. He was fine the day of his vaccines but now he is having yellow diarrhea and is not eating good. Could this be some sort of reaction from his vaccines? He was perfectly fine before them.

You can see some mild diarrhea and decreased appetite after getting vaccines, but typically that is seen a bit sooner after they are given, usually around 24 hours. I would try feeding him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea does not clear up in the next 24 hours or gets worse, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he starts vomiting, he stops drinking water, he starts vomiting water, and/or he becomes very lethargic, I would take him into a vet immediately. It could be a reaction. A dog can have vaccine reactions at any point in life. Reactions usually occur within 24-48 hours after vaccination. For the diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours then feed a bland diet (plain, boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If t doesn't resolve, see your veterinarian. In the future, separate the vaccines to determine which vaccine caused the reaction. Your veterinarian can pretreat with an antihistamine to avoid reactions. Call your veterinarian and report the possible reaction.

If he is very lethargic, have him examined by your veterinarian or at the local veterinary ER. If this is not possible, you can try withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Serve warm or mix in a teaspoon or two of baby food to stimulate the appetite. Feed until the stool is normal then transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea and lethargy do not resolve, you will definitely need to see your veterinarian.

Yes this could be a side effect to the vaccination, but it could also be unrelated. Take your dog off food for about 12 hrs, then feed bland food such as boiled rice with boiled white chicken meat in small quantities over several feeds a day,. Do this for a day, then start replacing small quantities of the rice with his normal food over the next two days until he is at the normal quantity of his regular food. At the same time you can offer him some black tea with glucose (10 tsp of Glucose and 1 tsp of salt (NOT Diet Salt!!) per quart of tea to drink. If the diarrhea does not go away by the end of the third day or if your dog deteriorates, you will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for an exam.

I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence as, if that is the case, antibiotics may be needed. Hi my dog got his vaccine and deworming on saturday.it lost its appetite and diahrrea.im worried plz help.its 45 days old puppy.
The diarrhea could be caused by the deworming treatment. Feed Rudy a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. He might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 4 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If the diarrhea does not resolve, take him to the vet to get treatment.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pj. I'm sorry to hear that he is experiencing vomiting and diarrhea. If a dog is going to suffer a vaccine reaction, it typically occurs the same day as the vaccination. So this is likely unrelated. He may be experiencing GI upset secondary to all the new treats. I would stop those for now. Being so young and small, he should see his veterinarian if symptoms persist. In the meantime, encourage him to eat and drink small amounts. It will be easy for him to become dehydrated at his size. I hope this information helps!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear that Apollo had some diarrhea after receiving his vaccines. It is not unusual for puppies to experience mild vaccine reactions, which can manifest as a small amount of vomiting and/or diarrhea. Apollo may be more lethargic/sleepy after his vaccines too. As long as he is otherwise acting normally and is not vomiting repeatedly or experiencing any other abnormal clinical signs (itchy skin, redness, etc) he will likely be OK. If you are ever concerned that he is not acting right or seems very dumpy, he should be seen by a veterinarian right away. I recommend still letting your veterinarian know that Apollo had this reaction so they are aware of it for next time. I hope this is helpful!

I would recommend putting him on a bland diet. Due to his age I ideally would recommend a prescription diet but since the holiday is approaching you can always do boiled chicken and white rice. If the stool doesn't resolve or gets worse then I recommend taking him to a veterinarian and having them deworm him and check a stool sample for intestinal parasites. Although rare, some dogs can have extreme reactions to vaccinations. This should be reported to your vets office so they can place an incident report on the recurrence and also to run a parvo test to determine underlying causes. Maintain fluid intake, ge may again require hospital treatment if he becomes weak. Offer small, bland low fat meals to help protect the intestine
