What's the best food for my rescue dog with one kidney and bad breath?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 months and 19 days old | 18 lbs

I adopted a rescue who had a kidney removed. I am worried I am not feeding her enough/giving her the right food. Currently she eats everything low protein and only kibble. She also has a really strong odor to her breath and coat even after a bath. I just need some guidance of whats best for her! Thank you!

He best diet for Ripley would depend on whether or not her remaining kidney is functioning normally. Dogs only need one kidney so it is possible that a normal maintenance diet is all she needs. If her remaining kidney is not normal she may benefit from a therapeutic kidney diet. Bad breath could be a sign of kidney insufficiency (uremia) but could also be a sign of dental or gastrointestinal disease. I would recommend asking your vet what is best for her situation.
