My puppy is sneezing and scratching. What's causing it and what to do?

My puppy is sneezing and stopping to scratch a lot inside and outside. Is this allergies? Is there anything I can do or should I not be worried? He is only 3 months and is 3 pounds do I worried about giving him anything.

It is possible that Casper is suffering from allergies, but it could also be two different things causing his sneezing and scratching. The sneezing could be caused by a respiratory infection, while the scratching could be caused by fleas, mites, or ringworm. I would call the vet in the morning to make an appointment for him to be seen. The vet can diagnose the cause of his symptoms, and can treat him for it. Please do not give him anything OTC. You don't want what's causing his symptoms so it could be the wrong medication for it. In addition, there are a number of human medications that are not safe to use in dogs because they are toxic. Only the vet can prescribe safe medications for him. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

He may have an upper respiratory infection. Since this has been going on for so long, I suggest getting him in to see your vet for an exam. He may need medication in order to help him shake his cold. The itching could be any number of things, from allergies to food or something in the environment, to fleas. Your vet can check this out at the same time as the sneezing and can give you a better idea of what is going on and how best to treat them both.

My puppy has been sneezing very often for the past 3 days. Doesn't matter if we're inside or outside. His appetite hasn't changed, but is a little more tired and cranky. He is also teething though, can see he has lost about 4 teeth in last 2 weeks. C
Hi there. Sneezing could be caused by allergies, or an upper respiratory infection. If he's acting fairly normal otherwise (eating and drinking fine, active, etc.) you could opt to monitor him for now and see how things go for the next few days. The problem may resolve on its own, similar to when we get a minor cold or allergy flare-up. If there is no improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if your pup develops other symptoms such as coughing, thick green or yellow nasal discharge, or begins acting very lethargic or not eating, then I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian for treatment.

Which cortisone spray should I use to relieve my dogs scratching?
Scratching can be caused by a lot of things, and a cortisone spray may not be the correct treatment. This scratching can be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If he isn't up to date on his flea treatment, I can give you one for him. First, I would give him Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. If he is up to date on his flea treatment, I recommend taking him into the vet for an exam today or tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found

This could be due to dust, or strong scents in the environment. I would first check to see if that's a possibility. Things like sand storms, construction, perfumes and smoke can irritate the nasal passages and cause them to sneeze like this. An infection is also possible. Sometimes they can get a mild infection similar to a cold. These infections have the possibility to go away on their own, or can get worse with time. The scratching is suspicious of an allergy, but could also be due to other things like fleas or mites. A vet would need to exam Margo in order to determine this. If Margo starts having nasal discharge, loses energy, or otherwise seems worse, then I'd recommend taking her to a vet. I hope that helps and Margo gets better soon.

Dusty is a very handsome boy! Yes, it is possible that he could have allergies or a respiratory infection, but without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. I would have him seen by a vet for this on Monday if he's still sneezing. Until then, only take him out long enough to go potty, keep him indoors and warm, make sure he keeps eating, offering him gently warmed wet food if it appears he's going off his food. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment (on prescription given by your vet to avoid overdosage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). My dog has been sneezing excessively most of the day. I have given her bynedryl with a little improvement but she is still sneezing A LOT! She also has been scratching and chewing at herself lately.
Excessive sneezing can be seen as a result of allergies but also with respiratory infection, or a foreign object being inhaled and causing irritation (this is most common in cases where the sneezing was very sudden in onset, out of the blue!). If your dog has been scratching and chewing at herself then allergies or ectoparasites (fleas, mites) may be involved as well. I would recommend a visit to the veterinarian to try to determine the cause of her symptoms and get appropriate treatment. Benadryl will help with some allergy cases but often we may need prescription strength medications, at least initially to get the itch/allergy under control.
