My dog has high BUN and creatinine. How to lower kidney levels?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 6 years and 8 months old | 10 lbs

My dog had her tests done yesterday and were higher than I thought they would be, I feed her kd diet and she drinks water and is active, act normal with no signs of kidney disease. Her bun lab results were 39.000 above normal compared to the ones in 2016 were 38.000 and 2015 were 31.000. Her creatinine is 3.300 compared to 2016 2.100 and 20115 2.000.I know they're higher now maybe because I've been giving her treats I'm not supposed to which definitely I stopped. Can I lower this levels somehow?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Linda. I would stop feeding any treats and keep her strictly on the kidney diet. She should have her blood pressure checked and a urinalysis done to look for extra protein in the urine. Both are common with kidney disease. There are medications that she can take that will help both conditions if necessary. This will slow further progression of her disease. Depending on her results, I will add a potassium supplement (if her potassium is low) or a phosphate binder (if her phosphorus is high). These things will help her to feel good for as long as possible. Always ensure she drinks plenty of water. I hope this information helps!
