Pregnant cat full term with dark discharge. Does she need a C-section?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 12 lbs

I have a pregnant cat that is full term (or over) and he has a lot of black/dark brown discharge that seems to be matting up her vulva. She doesn't mind when I wipe it off of her but it's so thick, I won't all come off. What do do?? Does she need a c-section?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gaia! I am worried about all that discharge and I recommend taking her to an Emergency hospital. I think that she may need a C-section or there is a bad uterine infection. If the black color is green tinted it may indicate placental separation which is life threatening to the kittens. I wish you the best!
