Dog biopsy recovery: When can my dog resume exercise and play?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 12 years and 1 month old

Hi! My Sadie had a fine needle ultrasound biopsy today. She did really well for the procedure and didn't end up even needing anesthesia. She's over all in good health and test was done to rule out cancer (she had a test/biopsy come back positive but oncologist can't find "cancer" now or any other signs or symptoms). I forgot to ask how long she needed for recovery. Should she avoid exercise or playing for any period of time? Your thoughts are valued. Thank you!

What great news about Sadie! Given that she didn't need anesthesia, I would have her rest for the next couple of days, taking her for short walks to potty and not playing just yet. After about 72 hours, if she is feeling fine, you can start increasing her exercise and play. I hope this helps!

Hello. Your veterinarian has taken an abundance of precautions for your pet. For most routine surgeries, even in an older girl like yours, restricting activity for 7-10 days is fine. This usually means curtailing running up & down stairs, jumping on furniture & leaving a pet unattended outdoors for hours on end. If Precious is primarily a house dog, then just try & slow her down a bit & either walk her on a leash outdoors or supervise her activity. I think at this point in time you can let Precious play with her toys. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

How long after having an epulis removed (without having to have stitches) can they play with other dogs
Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Thir can be exercised with other dogs as normal 24hrs after general anesthesia. However, he should not play flight with other dogs as his gum may have tendency to bleed for 2-3 days after epulis removal.

Yes absolutely she will!! Post operative care usually involve rest for 36 hours after surgery, to wear a buster collar and to do lead walks and restrict exercise for 10 days. Other than that she will be ok no worries, in a month time she will be like nothing was happened.

spayed baby doesn't have interest in play.spayed on Friday.on pain medsEats,drinks,pees and poops.In e-collar but even when out of ut she does't play.
She is still recovering from her spay only 2 days out from surgery. She really shouldn't be doing strenuous play activity until after she has completely healed from her surgery, which is around 10 days post surgery. So take it easy and allow her to heal for now, she will be back to her normal self in no time.

I have a good English mastiff and she is 8 yrs old , she was spayed 3wks ago after contracting pyometra. She has made a full recovery but I'm concerned walking her to much, she's a big dog so needs lots of exercise .
If she has made a full recovery and has had stitches removed it is likely okay for her to go on short controlled walks on a leash. I typically recommend waiting at least one month for the abdominal muscle to heal before vigorous exercise: ask your vet when they would recommend starting to increase her activity level.

She really shouldn't be jumping, running, or playing for 2-3 weeks to allow her back time to heal. Even if the medicine makes her feel better, you should try to keep her from running and jumping so she doesn't re-injure herself. Glad the prednisone is helping her allergies. If she needs to be on long term allergy medications then you cold talk to your vet about trying Cytopoint or Apoquel.

Piper just got home from being spayed, and all she wants to do is play. What is something we can do for her to have fun but is still considered 'limited activity'?
Chew toys and food kongs are ideal at this stage as she would be likely to lie down and rest the wound in order to 'play' with them. Regular, limited lead walking will also help to deal with some of her excessive energy. She should not be playing and running, jumping or stretching games as these may cause the stitches to rupture

By the second week after a spay is it safe to say that the stitches are mostly healed by now?? My puppy's stitches have been scabbing over for a while & she desperately wants to run around, jump and play. I'm just afraid of the stitches opening up.
Yes, 2 weeks should be sufficient time for the surgery site to heal. You can also bathe Snowball now if you want. Just keep an eye on the incision to make sure it continues to heal well. Let her increase her activity level slowly over the next few days and she should do great.

Is it okay to let my dog walk the day after getting spayed?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Yes, a short, leashed walk to go potty and stretch her legs is great. Within the week she will probably be feeling great and ready to walk and play normally, however, keep it on the easy side until the vet gives the ok. Do NOT allow: running, jumping, chasing anything, wrestling with playmates, swimming, etc. until you vet gives the Ok or until 14 days after the spay. Best wishes to you and Dakota!

Molly was spayed 3/12. I left the paperwork at work and was just wondering how long I should wait before I let her play outside with Wallace again.
In general, it is advised to restrict a dog's activity by preventing running/jumping/rough play for 10-14 days after a spay surgery to help reduce the risk of surgical complications. Keep the surgical site clean and dry by preventing splashing in mud/ dirt/ water, and take Molly out (on a leash) for short potty breaks only. I hope that helps!
