My chihuahua's nose bleeds from digging blankets. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old

My chihuahua digs into the blankets almost everyday with her nose and now it’s bleeding but she doesn’t seem to be in pain. She will “dig” her treats in the blankets using her nose & find her way in and out of the blankets the same way using her nose. We noticed blood yesterday and today we seen it’s her nose that’s bleeding. What can I use to treat her nose?

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This appears to be a small surface abrasion on her nose. I would recommend trying to limit Saml ability to dig and root in the blankets while her nose heals. Typically applying any topical medications to a lesion such as this can cause them to try to rub it more, exacerbating the problem. Keep her nose clean and dry, using a warm, damp washcloth if needed to clean it. Maybe for a few days try to limit her access to the blankets or remove any toys or treats she likes to "bury".
