My puppy has mucus, loose yellow stool, pink discharge. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 30 days old | 5.51156 lbs

What does it mean if my puppy has mucus in her stool? She has a yellow slightly loose stool with pinkish discharge. Should I consult my vet immediately? And are there any home remedies for it? Thank you so much.

Mucus in the stool can be caused by a medical illness such as hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. The pinkish color could be blood, which can also be caused by hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, intestinal parasites, a foreign body, damage to the GI tract, or most serious parvovirus. Parvo is a possibility if Hailey isn't fully vaccinated, and it is too often fatal. Given she is a young puppy and there possibly blood in her stool, I would consult with your vet immediately. That would be best for her. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

The most common causes of stool changes in a puppy is GI parasites so I suggest have Hailey's stool evaluated by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian can check for parasites and prescribe an appropriate medication to treat. Other causes of stool changes in a puppy can include infection, diet sensitivity or changes, or internal organ issues. If Hailey's diarrhea continues or she shows any other signs of illness she will need to be examined by a veterinarian. If the mucous or blood tinged stool persists hailey could become dehydrated, anemic, or malnourished. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Hailey is feeling better soon!
