Is it normal for my 6-week puppy not to drink from her bowl?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 12 days old | 2 lbs

My 6 week puppy eats dry food only if I put water in it to get mushy, then may drink a little of what's in there but I can not seem to get her to drink water out of her water bowl. Is this normal for not to really be drinking water?

This is VERY normal. If you are adding water to her food then she likely doesn't need any additional water. Being only 2 pounds, she really only needs about 1/4-1/2 cup of water per day to maintain hydration.

You are doing a good job. Continue adding water to the dry food so it’s very wet and mushy. She will get enough water from that to not get dehydrated. Have fresh water available also and dip your finger in it and have her lick your finger. She will learn to drink in a week or two as she gets older.
